The ski area

Courchevel is a fantastic ski area with over 150 kilometres of slopes and 58 ski lifts. However being part of the world-famous Three Valleys, the largest and most extensive ski areas in the world, is its true selling point!

Also known as the 3 Valleys or Trois Vallées, you have in total over 600 km of the most beautiful skiing or snowboarding in the world. It is a ski resort that is accessibility for people of all levels - children, adults, beginners and experts. 5 fun facts about Courchevel

  1. The first purpose built ski resort in France. Courchevel was one of the first purpose built ski resort in France opening in 1946. The name Courchevel was also chosen for marketing reasons to compete with the rival ski resort Val d’Isère. The name comes from two french words ‘écorcher’, which means ‘to skin’ or ‘flay’ and ‘veau’ which means ‘veal’ or ‘calf’, put it together and you get ‘skin a calf’.
  2. Michelin-star dining! Courchevel is home to some of the world's finest dining establishments, including a number of Michelin-starred restaurants. In fact there are more Michelin-star’s found per square metre in Courchevel then anywhere else in the world. Our Hotel Chabichou has a 2 Michelin star restaurant that you can dine at during your stay!
  3. Ice hockey and ski jumping. Courchevel is also known for its ice hockey, hosting many international tournaments. Plus, in Le Praz, one of the lower resort villages, you'll find the resorts famous ski jump. In 2011 the resort invested 1.5 million euros to upgrade the site making sure it was up to the International Ski Federation's (FIS) latest regulations.
  4. Courchevel has Europes shortest and highest runway. The Altiport located just above Courchevel 1850 is famous for being Europes shortest airport runway at 537 metres long and an 18% gradient. It is also the highest tarmacked runway at 2010 metres altitude.
  5. Not just one resort, but a collection of six different villages. The highest and probably most famous village is Courchevel 1850. This village is the epiphany of luxury and a well known place for the rich and famous, including the British royal family.
