Is learning to ski as an adult a good or bad idea?

Presentation

We'll get straight to the point... yes it's a good idea of course!
Maybe as a child, you never had the opportunity to hit the slopes, and now you are with friends or family members who have suggested a ski holiday. Don't hold back, say yes, it's not too late to start skiing as an adult. Even if the 'I'm going, but I'm scared' resonates, you'll regret it if you said no.

Imagine those beautiful snowy landscapes and sliding down perfectly groomed pistes like a pro. What's even better is Oxygène is here to help you, and we have perfect adult ski lessons available in all our resorts. You may have lots of questions, so let's slide straight in to answer them...

How long does it take to learn to ski?

As you can imagine, it depends. Your physical condition, your fears and apprehensions, your motivation, and many other factors can play a role in the learning process. Most of the time, the biggest fear is of falling and hurting yourself. It is indeed possible to overcome this fear and to ski safely!

Do you have to be fit or athletic to learn to ski?

Being fit or athletic is certainly an advantage. Learning to ski requires a lot of energy and achy muscles can often occur. But, anyone can learn to ski (unless your doctor advises against it). With Oxygène, we even offer adaptive ski lessons using equipment specially adapted for people with mobility restrictions. Interested and want to know more? Contact us directly.

Do I need to have lessons?

Taking ski lessons is the perfect way to learn in a safe (and fun) environment with other like-minded people. The first reason is for you to overcome any 'ski' fears with the help of your instructor. The second is that your instructor also chooses the correct slopes according to your level.

For example, when you are a beginner skier and are afraid of falling or have not mastered your turns, it isn't reassuring to be on a piste which is either too steep or narrow for you to turn. That's why the professional ski instructors out there, to help you learn safely and correctly, at the right pace for you.

Group lesson or private lesson?

It depends on you, your preferences and your budget. With a private lesson, the instructor is entirely there for you. This can speed up the learning process allowing you to advance quicker. But it is more expensive to take a week of private lessons than a week of group.

What is great about group lessons is they allow you to learn with others in the same situation as you. It's fun, social and takes place every day, meaning you commit to the full week. This often pushes you to carry on until the end. With Oxygène all our group lessons are small in size, providing a quality learning environment! You can book both group and private lessons in all our resorts too.

Is it possible to learn with a friend or relative?

Well, you can, but we would not recommend it! They are not professionals and you will be taking the risk of a friendship fallout. Why put your relationship under unnecessary pressure?

You're friend also does not know the resort like an instructor does. Snow conditions can change quickly in the mountains and you could find yourself on a slope unsuitable for your level, learning bad habits or even injuring yourself. So, let your friend be a friend, meet up for lunch, chat about skiing and generally have a good time together instead of arguing.

How to choose the right equipment?

We suggest you rent your equipment from a professional ski shop like ours. Book the beginner package with skis, boots and a helmet! When you rent via a ski shop you know the equipment is renewed regularly and maintained to a high standard. Ski technicians are also there to fit your equipment correctly depending on your size and weight. If there is a problem you can go back. And the little added bonus, you go on holiday with a much lighter bag!

Which ski resort should to choose?

A ski resort you like is a good start! However, for practical reasons, we always suggest you look for a ski resort with a beginner's area or green slopes close to your accommodation. This will be an undeniable advantage! Some of our accommodation is at the foot of the slopes, overlooking a variety of different level pistes. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about which accommodation would be the best to book for you.

What should I wear while skiing?

Make sure you have layers you can add or take off easily! Choose a good pair of warm breathable thermals, a long-sleeved top and possibly a sweater or a fleece if it's cold. Leggings or long johns are great for keeping warm, and one pair of ski socks (not two) ideally with compression zones for optimal comfort. A ski suit (jacket and trousers or an all-in-one), a helmet, non-slip gloves or mittens, and a neck scarf. Ski goggles or glasses are also extremely essential for protecting your eyes from the sun's reflection on the snow.
