What to pack for a ski trip?

All resorts

Presentation

You've chosen your ski resort, booked your accommodation, reserved equipment hire, lift passes, ski lessons and activities, and you're now on the official countdown. Yes, that's right, it's almost time, but there is one last job to do...pack your bag. But, what do you REALLY need to pack for your next ski trip? This article helps with exactly that. Read on to find out what key items you must not forget for your next winter mountain holiday...

Ski Clothing

  • When it comes to mountain clothing, it is extremely important to layer up. Dressing in layers means you can either add or take off items depending on if you are too hot or cold.
  • Starting with your base layer, you'll need a good pair of breathable thermals or long johns.
  • Your thermal top should be long-sleeved and not too thick.
  • Your bottom half should ideally be foot free. But why? Because wearing a pair of socks over tights can lead to chafing. It can also make your feet feel colder and more constructed, as it can stop blood from circulating easily.
  • Make sure you have 1 good pair of socks on only, and with compression points around the shins if possible.
  • Over your thermals, you will need a warm fleece or thick jumper. If you do suffer from being cold, you can always add another thin layer between your thermals and fleece.
  • Next in line is the ski suit! This can be either a jacket and trouser combo or an all-in-one. Make sure you do not forget your helmet while skiing too. While off the slopes, a nice warm winter hat will do the trick perfectly. Non-slip waterproof warm gloves or mittens are a necessity for skiers/boarders, and a good neck scarf, one which you can pull up over your face, is useful when it is particularly cold or while sitting on chairlifts.
  • Last but not least, you'll need a good pair of sunglasses and/or ski goggles. These are essentials for protecting your eyes from the sun's rays and reflection, which is especially strong at altitude and on snow.

Après-Ski Clothing

  • There is absolutely nothing stopping you from keeping your ski suit on, and you'll see many people do this!
  • But, if you do want to change, we suggest a good pair of trousers or jeans, a t-shirt or top, and a jumper, plus a coat, hat, scarf and gloves.
  • Make sure you have a good pair of waterproof winter boots too. You will be walking through plenty of snow, and let's admit, wet feet are not a good look (or feel)!

Accessories

  • As mentioned, the sun can be very strong, even while hiding behind clouds. Pick up a good sunscreen with at least a factor 30. Make sure it protects you from both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Lip balm can be a great idea, but if you are wearing it while outside, this too needs to be UV protected.

General Holiday Equipment

  • As with all holidays, don't forget a first aid kit, toiletries (shower gel, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant etc.), your money, credit card, passport/ID, a phone charger, mobile phone and camera.
  • Anyone self-driving to the resort must also have snow chains in the boot of the car and winter tires already mounted (even on a 4x4).
  • We suggest snacks and a reusable bottle of water for your journey too.

Skiing equipment

  • Depending on your level and experience, you may or may not have your own ski equipment. Ideally, we suggest you rent while in resort. Renting avoids having to lug your items through the airport, on buses or trains. Rental equipment will be regularly renewed, serviced and fitted by professionals.
  • For example, ski equipment includes skis, poles and boots. Snowboard equipment includes a snowboard and boots. You could bring a pair of protection shorts too. These are particularly useful for snowboarders!
  • Please note, a helmet is obligatory for all children in ski lessons, and otherwise strongly recommended for all!

So, did we miss anything? What else are you packing in your suitcase?
